1. Do you offer
day passes or individual class rates?
No, you can attend individual
dances or spectate individual contests, but in order to attend classes you
do need to buy the weekend pass. The reason for this is, based on
our past experience offering day passes, most people prefer only to buy
one day, and a camp of this caliber with the live music, international
instructors, and expensive production simply can't survive with everyone
paying half or a third of the weekend rate.
2. I would just like to attend the night dances and spectate the
contests but not attend classes. Which pass should I buy?
There isn't a specific pass for non-class attendees, but here's what
you do: buy your "all four dances" pass on Thursday night, and your
"all three days contest spectating" pass on Friday day (see
pricing/registration for times and costs). These two wristbands will
get you admission to all events except classes - if you wish to be a
competitor but not attend classes, there is a Competitor's Pass for this
purpose.
3. Do I need a partner to sign up?
No, most classes (other than the aerials classes) will rotate. However, the
camp always fills up faster for follows than leads, so sometimes within 2
weeks of the camp any new follows wanting to sign up singly will have to be
put on a waiting list. This is in the interest of keeping the lead/follow
ratio fairly even so the classes will rotate smoothly.
4.
Do I need to buy my dance only or spectator tickets in
advance?
No, none of the events will sell out, and we are not sending out advance
tickets this year (just a postcard with a confirmation number), so it is
probably better to just buy the tickets at the door.
5. Do I need to be an advanced dancer to attend Camp
Hollywood?
No, not at all! The camp is designed to appeal to dancers
of all levels - many class takers have never danced before this weekend!
6. Do I need to know Hollywood Style to attend Camp
Hollywood?
Again, not at all! Our camp has expanded its
boundaries in the past few years to include all styles of Lindy Hop.
You can learn Hollywood Style Lindy here, but you can also learn all sorts
of other styles of Lindy Hop as well.
7. Can I videotape during the event?
No, we will have cameras covering the dances, contests, and class material.
You can feel free to tape outside of the classes & other events - ie, during
a practice session, etc. We'll be producing an extensive video of the
weekend which will be available pre-order during the weekend or afterwards
through our website here.
8. Do I need to rent a
car during Camp Hollywood?
No, the camp is designed to be car-free - if you're coming in to LAX, there
are free Marriott shuttles running every few minutes, which will take you
the short distance to the hotel. All events are in the same ballroom at the
hotel, and there are restaurants, buffets, and convenience stores right
there.
9. What other local
events are going on before and after Camp Hollywood?
There is plenty of swing going on just about every night
in LA - www.lindyhopping.com is an excellent resource for weekly venues.
Be sure to call ahead as sometimes schedules can change without notice.
10. What exactly is
the deal with the contests? Is the NJC a separate entity?
Yes, the NJC is meant to be a separate entity from
the Camp - that's why you 'll see many of your instructors competing in
the Pro divisions! The dual event concept is meant to allow us to reduce
overall prices and allow NJC participants access to the great Camp
Hollywood dances, and Camp participants the opportunity to watch or
participate in some national-level contests. There are two free contests
at Camp Hollywood/NJC - the traditional Camp Hollywood Jitterbug Contest
Saturday night, and the Inter-generational Sunday night. The only
requirement for these contests is that participants have bought the ticket
for that evening. All the other contests require a weekend pass.
11. Do I need to
choose my classes in advance?
No, but you do
need to pick your level (Beginner Track, Intermediate, Advanced, or
Masters' Track) in advance, and stick with that level throughout the
weekend. For 2007 we have five classrooms, so there will be at
least one class for your level every hour. The Beginner's Track
classes are progressive, and the Masters' Track classes all require
partners (you don't have to have the same partner for each class - we just
want to not have to rotate in these classes to be able to get through more
advanced material). This system has been put in place for 2007 to guarantee
even lead/follow ratios for each class and reduce class overcrowding.
12. Will the
instructors be available for private lessons during the weekend?
Yes! Just ask them when and where - we will have a
Private Lesson/Practice room available with a sign up sheet. If you're in
town before or after the event, some instructors will be available then as
well.
13. Is is necessary to stay at the Marriott to attend Camp
Hollywood? It's not necessary, but we sure would appreciate
it! We get to continue to hold our event at the Marriott based on
how many people stay there (this is how, after the record numbers staying
at the hotel in 2005, we were finally given an additional classroom for
2006). So, if you can, please stay at the Marriott!
